Judging, Talks & Workshops

Judging

I am a WCPF appointed photographic judge with half a dozen years experience and a fair consistent re-book rate.  As a photographer that enters club & inter-club competitions I have gained a first hand appreciation of how judges comments can affect a photographer, as such I try balance being positive & empathic with justifying my scores.

Whilst I was appointed through the WCPF I live one the border between the WCPF, MCPF and WPF and I am happy to judge for clubs that might be part of one of these other federations.

Introduction to Studio Photography - Talk and Live Demo

This talk is aimed at clubs that have studio lights but are unsure how to use them.  It starts off with a light-hearted presentation on studio lighting, what the different bits of kit are and importantly what lighting can do for you photography.  For the second half I do a live demo showing how you can quickly and easily change the look of a photo by making simple adjustments with the lights.  For this talk I will require the club to provide a model or a club member who is willing to model.

Facilitated Model Shoot

This is aimed at club nights and sub groups that are looking to have a go at model photography but aren't sure where to start.  I'll provide and set-up all the equipment (except cameras) provide advice on camera settings, and work with the photographers & the model.  I try and remain flexible and if there's something a photographer would like to try I do my best to incorporate it.  Note, this is ideally suited for small clubs, sub groups, clubs with a strong social side, or with other activities running in the background, as it's only viable for one photographer to shoot at a time.    I am happy for the club to source a model or I can happily provide recommendations.

Studio Lighting Workshop

This is a half day workshop for up to four people builds on the above talks and is aimed at giving the photographers the tools they need to create a look that complements the images they want to take be that edgy, beautiful, powerful, etc.   I cover the effects of; position of the light, distance from the subject, types of modifiers, fill light, and rim lighting, and importantly when you might choose one over the other.  This is not a turn up and take nice setup pictures experience rather my aim is that afterwards you will have the knowledge to do it.

Woodland Photography Workshop

This last one is still a work in progress that I'm refining, I had hoped for it to be ready by now but it needs some more refinement so I'm looking for some beta testers.
